Constantine was smiling like an idiot, but he couldn’t help it. Everything was going just right, including his new relationship with Micah. He had to focus on the video call he was on, though, so he pushed those thoughts away and looked at the two heroes on his screen. “Do you have any more questions?”

The two heroes looked at each other. They’d only recently left the conclave, and they were still wary. That was what the video call was for. Constantine had reassured them that they’d done the right thing by leaving the conclave and that they didn’t have to fight against them they didn’t want to. He hoped they’d become fallen heroes, but he wouldn’t push them for something they weren’t ready to give.

“How are the fallen heroes different from the conclave?” the woman asked. “There has to be a leader, right?”

“There is. Mordred was a hero, and he’s a great person. I realize you don’t know him and that you’re wary, but we’ve been working hard to keep both humans and supernatural creatures safe. Unfortunately, sometimes, that meant killing heroes, or at the very least, fighting them. It makes us sound like the bad guys, but you know the conclave, maybe better than me since you were working with them until recently. What they’re doing isn’t right.”

“But how do we know the fallen heroes won’t be worse?”

Constantine leaned forward. “You can’t know for sure, but Mordred has never asked me to kill children. That’s why I left the conclave, you know? They asked me to kill a bunch of kids and their mothers, and I couldn’t.”

“When do you need our answer?” the man asked.

Constantine wished he remembered their names. He looked at the desk, trying to find the piece of paper where he’d written them down, but he couldn’t. He supposed it wouldn’t matter if they decided to retire and disappear, and if they didn’t, well, he’d have time to get to know them.

“As soon as possible,” he answered. “I know it’s not an easy decision to make, but we won’t stand back for much longer. We can’t, not when the conclave is giving worse orders every day.”

Micah wasn’t with the conclave anymore, but that wasn’t the only way they found out about the conclave’s orders. An entire tribe of undines had been slaughtered just yesterday. There was not one tribe member alive, and thinking about it made Constantine want to go out there, find the conclave member who’d given that order, and kill them.

“We’ll talk, and we’ll let you know,” the woman promised.

There wasn’t much else to say after that, and when they hung up, Constantine leaned back in his chair and briefly closed his eyes. He thought he’d convinced them, but even if he hadn’t, at least they weren’t working for the conclave anymore. That was two heroes the fallen heroes wouldn’t have to fight when the time came, and in the end, that was all that mattered.

Since the meeting was over, he got to his feet and headed out.
